Major Issues

Tech Liberty is currently concerned with the following issues:

  • ACTA – We oppose the content of the ACTA treaty as well as New Zealand’s participation in it. ACTA is another attempt by the media and entertainment companies to use Governments to protect their economic interests at the expense of the rights of citizens.
  • Internet Filtering – We oppose the introduction of Internet filtering in New Zealand. The Internet is too important to give a government department the unimpeded right to decide what we can and cannot access over it.
  • Search and Surveillance Bill – We oppose the extension of powers in the Search and Surveillance Bill.
  • Court Suppression of Information – We have no objection to the careful trade off of the right to freedom of speech vs the right to a fair trial, but we feel that suppression may not be possible in the Internet age and are concerned that efforts to keep it will be unfair to some and adversely affect free speech on the Internet for many.
